Organization Name: University of Michigan, Law School, Urban Communities Clinic (Communities and Economic Development Clinic)
Organization Overview: Urban Communities Clinic
Students in the Urban Communities Clinic (UCC) provide transactional legal services for groups engaged in neighborhood-based community development. Students are responsible for all aspects of client representation; they interview, plan, counsel, negotiate, draft, problem solve, and advocate. Much of the U of M's CC's work involves corporate, tax, real estate, and municipal law. The UCC's clients are mostly nonprofit organizations involved in community development issues such as housing, education, health, and the arts. The Clinic represents clients in the Detroit metropolitan area. Students learn the skills of a transactional lawyer while exploring a community-based, non-traditional approach to poverty law.
